On Saturday, September 6th, the heart of the Burdekin region came alive with colour, music, and community spirit as the annual Burdekin Water Festival Mardi Gras Parade lit up Queen Street in Ayr. This beloved tradition, which first began in 1958, is one of Queensland’s longest-running festivals and a true celebration of the region’s most precious resource — water.

Held each year from July through September, the Burdekin Water Festival brings the community together with a variety of events, competitions, and celebrations. The highlight? The Grand Parade and Mardi Gras, where locals and visitors line the streets to cheer on dazzling floats, vibrant costumes, and local talent.
This year’s theme, “Bon Voyage – Roam the Globe”, inspired a global adventure — and Flexi Queensland was proud to be part of the journey!
Our service users and staff embraced the travel theme with enthusiasm, entering a spectacular float into the Grand Parade. The Flexi Bus transformed into a cruise ship, complete with tropical décor, leis, cruise lanyards, and a sea of colourful Hawaiian shirts. With huge smiles and plenty of excitement, our service users walked behind the float, tossing lollies to delighted onlookers and soaking up the joyful atmosphere.
Following the parade, the fun continued with the Mardi Gras festivities. From thrilling show rides and face painting to mouth-watering food stalls and live performances by the Burdekin Brass Band, there was something for everyone. A special highlight for many was Melville’s Farm, which brought a touch of the country to the heart of town.

At Flexi Queensland, we are proud to be part of such a vibrant, inclusive community. Events like the Burdekin Water Festival showcase what makes our region truly special — connection, creativity, and celebration.
We’re already looking forward to next year. Until then, bon voyage!
