Creating a Safer Community: Flexi Queensland Installs AED at Petersen Hangout

For over 30 years, Flexi Queensland has been a trusted disability support provider in the Burdekin region. From in-home care and personal support to community access programs, we’ve proudly supported individuals and families across the region with compassion and commitment.

One of our most cherished community spaces is the Petersen Hangout – formerly known as the Therapy and Activity Centre – which has been a cornerstone of connection and inclusion since 2007. It’s more than just a facility; it’s a vibrant, welcoming hub where our service users gather daily to socialise, learn, and grow.

A Place to Belong

The Petersen Hangout is a vital part of our weekly rhythm. Beloved programs like Monday Madness bring everyone together for fun and engaging activities including:

  • Line dancing
  • Cooking workshops
  • Arts and crafts
  • Birthday celebrations
  • Sports days
  • Gardening and more

Over the years, the Hangout has also hosted visiting disability support services, Allied Health professionals, training sessions, community workshops, emergency respite, and short-term accommodation.

Prioritising Safety with a New AED

As our community has grown, so too has our commitment to providing not just inclusive services, but also safe and secure environments. In 2024, we identified the need for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at the Petersen Hangout –

a vital tool in responding to sudden cardiac arrest emergencies.

Thanks to the generous support of the North Queensland Gas Pipeline Grant, Flexi Queensland was able to acquire a Zoll Plus Fully Automated Defibrillator. This decision was made following expert consultation with The Job Shop in the Burdekin, ensuring we selected the right equipment for our needs.

“An AED available in the community and workplace can significantly increase the casualty survival by 75% for someone experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest. AEDs can be used by anyone, even with very little or no training, and provide clear voice prompts and visual instructions. By having an AED readily available, workplaces can create a safer environment for their employees, service users, and community members. Here at The Job Shop, we believe that First Aid is for Everyone, Everywhere.
